The Three Stages Of Violence - 1662 Words

The three stages of violence. According to the article, The Cycle of Domestic violence, there are three stages of violence. They are defined as the tension-building stage, the explosive stage, and the honeymoon stage (Domestic Violence Roundtable, 2008). The tension-building stage. The first stage, is the tension-building stage. This stage is known by a time of extreme stress and tension. During this time, the batterer (or abuser) may become overly agitated, and begin acting aggressively. It is also common during this time for the abuser to act increasingly protective of his or her partner and attempt to isolate them from friends and family more than usual. During this stage, the victims feel as though they are walking on eggshells and†¦show more content†¦At this time, the abuser begins to feel as though they are gaining control, but they still feel fearful their partner will leave, thus leaving the cycle to reoccur. Many find it hard to break the cycle of violence, they believe in the renewed hope they feel during the honeymoon stage. They are optimistic that their partner can change and is deep down a good person. Effects on Children in Abusive Homes â€Å"It is estimated that approximately 1.5 million women and 830,000 men experience physical or sexual assault annually in the United States by intimate partners† (De Jong, 2016, p. 201). â€Å"In the United States more than 15 million children live in families in which domestic violence occurs and almost half of these children witness severe violence in assaults of a parent† (De Jong, 2016, p. 201). Physical consequences. One of the physical consequences associated with children in abusive homes include the direct injury to the child(ren). This could result in the child being harmed at the hands of the abuser, usually resulting in bruises or broken bones. In cases of pregnancy, there is a risk of low birth weight or perinatal death. Also, during an altercation women may hold their baby in an attempt to detour a physical attack, only to cause accidental harm to the child. Characteristics of myself Free Essays

Characteristics of Myself Kerri Larson Organizational Behavior Southern Institute of Technology Personality can be defined by the characteristic patterns of thoughts, feelings and behaviors that â€Å"determine how an individual reacts to and interacts with others† (Nancy, Robbins, Judge, 2014, p. 42). It is very important as it helps define what type of person you are. We will write a custom essay sample on Characteristics of myself or any similar topic only for you Order Now An individual’s characteristics play a large role when it comes to understanding one another. These patterns make every individual unique and distinct from each other. When I think of personality, I think of it as someone’s entire being including perception, learning and titivation. Inner awareness of self and person-situation interaction make up an individual’s personality. When I think of my personality, I like to assume I can describe myself as sociable, motivated and ambitious. These characteristics I believe really were ingrained as core values in my life after working hard from such a young age. Having understood the importance of personality, attitudes, values relating to motivation in the workplace, I reflected on my own personality and how it has affected me and the individuals work with. Growing up, my family wasn’t wealthy. My parents aired extremely young and my sister and were born not too long after. I don’t remember things in a negative way as a child, but after my parents divorced, things were different. We never had money to buy the toys wanted or go on the trips like my friends. I remember growing up thinking that my friends had what they wanted so why couldn’t we. My parents both remarried a few years later and my step-parents were now permanently in the picture. Since my father moved away, my step-father ensured that we had discipline in our life. There were never enough chores to do and work to be done round the house. My step-father was teaching me work ethic at that age and had no idea how chores would shape the way I work today. It was my fourteenth birthday and as would have said at the time, I was â€Å"made† to look for a job before I could play with my friends. I did as I was told, and got a part time job working at a fast food restaurant. This was obviously not my dream job and after a couple of job changes, I worked full time throughout high school earning money to pay for things wanted. Of course I did not always make the best decisions, but I learned that nothing comes for free and that o have to work hard to get a head in life. When I look back at this, I don’t see punishment but a form of discipline which has made me who I am today. Worked endless hours, two jobs at a time and even though wasn’t making exponential amounts of money, I was supporting myself and doing the things that wanted. I remember thinking to myself that never wanted to live on the bare minimum. I didn’t need the finest things in life, but comfortable living was something I couldn’t live without. Although gained the value of a hard work ethic and discipline, I was yet to receive another life challenge that loud shape my attitudes and values. I was born in Slave Lake, Alberta on May 11, 1984. I was raised and continued to live in Slave Lake throughout my life. Remember the phone call clear as day from my mother. I was coming home from a beach holiday with my boyfriend at the time and I had heard the news that my aunt and uncle had lost their home to a wildfire near town. We had a long drive from Calgary the next day, so we decided to come home early. We arrived, unpacked and headed to the store to get food. There was threat that town could be under alert, but nothing had happened. We decided o go for lunch at Subway and then go home to pack a bag, just in case. I remember the truck radio on before we went inside stating â€Å"I repeat, we are not under evacuation notice†. We ordered our lunch and got back in the truck. There was no radio when we started the drive home. As we drove closer to our home, which was only a five minute drive away, the smoke got thicker and we noticed more and more cars evacuating the area. The wind had pickup for so much that the shingles were ripping off our roof like Evolve. The police arrived to our door at the same time as we arrived and stated we had eve minutes to evacuate and leave. The fire was going to hit town. On May 14th, 2011, evacuated my home and sat across the highway in a nearby parking lot watching my home being engulfed in flames. I arrived home at 1 :pm and was evacuated by 4:pm. I was 27 years old and my life at that moment changed forever. Three hundred and seventy eight homes burnt down including my parents. There was nothing left to salvage. I lost my job and broke up with my boyfriend of three years. Although my life was tested, I picked up my life, moved to Calgary and took a job with TACO Structures Logistics. Darted in as a temporary entry-level position with a chance to stay on permanent. I worked hard for long hours, stayed motivated and showed the organization that I deserved to be there permanently. Within six months, I was asked to stay on and have been with them ever since. I learned not only that hard work pays off, but staying motivated and ambitious were also key factors to my new success. After almost four years and three promotions, am managing a small team in our Calgary office. I can honestly say, that even though the fire destroyed many lives, my life has done nothing but grow in a costive way. I see life differently and try not to take the little things for granted. I am more motivated to live a more positive life and ensure that I help others and my community as much as can. When I think how this has shaped my life, I am more motivated to succeed not only at work, but in life as well. Since I started working in Calgary, can admit that it hasn’t been perfect. I have had much change in managers and team members and when you look for stability in your work environment, these constant changes make a huge impact. I was recently in a situation where I faced a situation where I isn’t sure could work for my organization anymore. There are certain things need and look for when working and as time went on, these values Were being tested more and more. When I think Of what I need as an employee or even an individual, trust is probably the more important characteristic. My manager is the person should be able to trust with my work, comments, feedback and criticism. Was assigned to a large task by my manager which would be completed in a few weeks. At the end of the task, I was required to summarize any issues and work with departments on corrective actions. When it came down to summarizing with my manager, he hose to consult another employee who was not involved. I felt betrayed that my manager did not trust my judgment and decisions. Wasn’t aware of how much trust and support meant to me and what the value of that meant as an individual. Also felt since I am a young professional, there was distrust based on the fact that there was a generational difference between my manager and I. Research suggests that generational differences exist in the workplace among the Baby Boomers (born between the mid-sass and the mid-sass), the Generation Seers (born between the mid-sass and the late sass), and he Generation Yes (born between 1979 and 1994). (Nan cy, Robbins, Judge, 2014, p. 80) My manager was a baby boomer while am a Generation Y and was one of the only Gene. Y on our team. Let that since I was younger, was not trusted due to the lack of knowledge and understanding which made me feel weak and not respected. My negative emotions ultimately sabotaged how felt about myself and my work ethic. Negative emotions can led to a number of deviant workplace behaviors. Anyone who has spent much time in an organization realizes that people often engage in voluntary actions that elate established norms and threaten the organization, its members, or both. (Nancy, Robbins, Judge, 2014, p. 58) Trust is important. If you don’t have trust, then how can anything else follow? The foundations of demodulating and leadership are built on trust. A few weeks went by and the disappointment turned to anger. I could no longer have displayed emotions, â€Å"those that the organization requires employees to show and considers appropriate in a given job† (Nancy, Robbins, Judge, 2014, p. 55). My felt emotions, â€Å"an individual’s actual emotions† (Nancy, Robbins, Judge, 2014, p. 5), were surfacing and the office was becoming an unbearable place to be. I was so disappointed I had to talk to someone, which led me to a small room with human resources. The disappointment built from such a small Issue, that felt I could almost leave the organization which wasn’t the most rational decision. We must have the ability to experience emotions to be rational. (Nancy, Robbins, Judge, 2014, p. 56). The value of trust was so important to me, that felt could no longer work there or it would lead from negative emotions to something worse. The key to good decision making is to employ tooth thinking and feeling in our decisions. Nancy, Robbins, Judge, 2014, p. 56). After discussing my options and realizing that the choice of resigning was not the option for me, I decided to think positive and overcome the negative aspects of the scenario. What I also realized that this made me more motivated as an individual to prove that I was capable at completing and excelling in my career. I knew that was competent and hardworking and that one small iss ue was not going to deter me from proving to my manager and myself that was qualified to be there. I was taking a more proactive approach to my personality. People with a proactive personality identify opportunities, show initiatives, take action and persevere until meaningful change occurs. (Nancy, Robbins, Judge, 2014, p. 52). In the end I was given the different opportunity to work for another leader. I used this opportunity and took that motivation and was honest with my new manager. I spoke up about the values and motivation I was looking for in a leader and that if this was provided to me, I would provide the same. I took my negative emotions and transformed them into something positive. Because of this, I was also remoter to manage the team I worked in. Even though he was also another Baby Boomer, we both held the same opinion on trust and taking pride in your work. I used the opportunity to motivate my team when they felt discouraged and ensured that instead of mistrusting them, that they had the opportunity to show me as a leader, what they were capable of. I am not the perfect manager, but ensure that my team sees the importance of bringing themselves and values into their work and that each person brings something different to the table. Motivating them to see that everyone’s opinion is important and how this makes a bigger impact in the workplace. It not only betters them, but betters our organization. When I think of the meaning of the values I’ve gained over the years, they have ultimately defined what person I am today. I maintain my integrity because I apply these values to my life in whatever situation I am in. Since an individual’s effectiveness in the workplace often depends on his/her personality, attitudes and values, along with his/her motivation to succeed, it is important to understanding these characteristics of individuals. Considering these characteristics can be crucial or an organization to operate successfully. At the same time, it is essential that individuals understand the values associated with the organization in order to avoid any conflicting feelings toward the work they are employed to do. By recognizing and appreciating each others characteristics, values and behaviors, employees and the organizations they are part of, form a highly- beneficial symbolic relationship. Thus, it becomes imperative for employees to remain motivated and for organizations to keep them motivated. Recognizing the importance of personality, attitudes, values and motivations s something that everyone needs to do in life. I personally believe that people are tested and that this importance isn’t realized at the same time in life. People face different external forces and life is never the same for everyone. Personalities are important to recognize as it strongly influences one’s expectations, self-perceptions, values and attitudes. (Wisped). Understanding your own personality as well as others gives you the ability to communicate effectively and understand others better. When you have the ability to understand others personality as well as your own, you gain the ability to recognize what motivates them, what is and is not important to them and where attitudes exist. It is also important to understand the difference between personality and attitudes. Attitudes can change more frequently where personality is more deeply ingrained. In organizations, attitudes are important because they affect job behavior. Employees may believe, for example, that supervisors, auditors, managers, and time-and- motion engineers are all conspiring to make them work harder for the same or less money. This may then lead to a negative attitude toward management hen an employee is asked to stay late and help on a special project. (Nancy, Robbins, Judge, 2014, p. 88). Attitudes are our feelings towards certain ideas or issues. They become almost contagious and can be greatly influential among peers and co-workers. Our attitudes are the manifestation of our values and they are expressed through what we say or do and reflect a person’s sense of right and wrong or what â€Å"ought† to be. Values tend to influence attitudes and behavior and are an integral part of every culture. With worldview and personality, they generate behavior. Being part of a ultra that shares a common core set of values creates expectations and predictability without which a culture would disintegrate and its members would lose their personal identity and sense of worth. Values tell people what is good, beneficial, important, useful, beautiful, desirable and constructive. They answer the question of why people do what they do. Integrity alongside values is equally important to the workplace. It gives individuals the ability to bring themselves and their personalities to the organization but stay to true the organizations values as well. Integrity, strong ethics and values are crucial o an organization’s success not only because the individuals understand what is right and wrong is, but they practice this in all they do. Work ethics can be described as not only how someone feel about their job or career, but also how someone does his/her job or responsibilities. This involves attitude, behavior, respect and communication. When you reflect on the importance of personality, values and attitudes and how they contribute to motivation in the workplace, it is equally important to remember that they all have different influences on different motivational processes. Motivation is different for very individual as each person’s preferences are different. Moreover, there are also external drivers of motivation. Those external drivers contribute to the level of the motivation of employees in terms of better performance within organizations. The core thing of motivation is to give people what they really want most from the work. The more the managers provide what they want, the more they can expect what they are looking for like productivity, quality, and services. A positive motivation philosophy and practice should improve productivity, quality, and service. Motivation helps people to achieve locals, to gain a positive perspective, to create the power to change, to build self-esteem and capability, to explore potentiality with creativity, to manage their own developments and their own abilities. When I consider my workplace and co-workers, I attempt to ensure that I bring my values and my personality to work every day. Of course I was not always like this and there were days when I am not so motivated and ambitious. As well when I consider all the external forces one experiences on a day to day basis, personality is always changing. Ironically my workplace offers a similar course o this course and I learned a little about organizational behavior prior to registering. One of the most interesting parts of the course was that I participated in a personality report and the results were not necessarily new or surprising, but realized how much my personality affects others. We took part in the DiSC Workplace model and had flying colors in dominance. I’m highly motivated, direct, result-orientated and focus on success and growth. Upon returning to work, I was adamant that one of my key co-workers take the same profile report. We used this opportunity to understand what each there’s personality type was and what influenced and motivated each other. Even though we work so well together and have a great working relationship, it was still beneficial to understand what her priorities and influences were. I could better understand her as a person and become a more effective leader. The other interesting factor I learned was that I am very task/job driven. I am extremely motivated by personal success and job-related functions. I learned that need to ensure that I consider others and contribute more to how they are feeling and what personally motivates them. When focused on completely ark or a project, need to also consider that factors such as personality, work ethic, values, skillet and knowledge all contribute to the quality of work rather than deadlines, budget and resources. I feel now that even though this was such a small opportunity to participate and understand how complex personalities are, learned so much about howl really affect and influence others. Understand why it is important to recognize what my values are and how my personality is affects others. In conclusion, the key point is that personalities, attitudes and values all contribute to motivation in individuals n different ways. It is what is unique about us that define how these characteristics contribute and shape who we are as individuals. How to cite Characteristics of myself, Papers

Reality and the Existence of God free essay sample

When Descartes decided to tear down his beliefs and start fresh, he needed a foundation upon which to build his ideology. When judging what reality is, God must be considered. He/she must be taken out of a religious concept and proven to exist, exist in a way in which we cannot be deceived into only thinking is real. The proof of the existence of God in this way forms the backbone of Descartes’ further forays into proving what is reality. God, being the supremely powerful, all-knowing all-seeing force that created the world and everything in it, was central in most 17th century philosophies. When investigating the importance of god in Descartes’ philosophy, one must first understand the science of the times. The basic principle of mechanism is that everything in the universe could eventually be explained in terms of mechanical laws, and with these laws there is no free will. We will write a custom essay sample on Reality and the Existence of God or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The universe moves like a complex clock, with everything pre-determined and in accordance with the laws of matter. Pierre Simon de Laplace stated We may regard the present state of the universe as the effect of the past and the cause of the future. An intellect which at any given moment knew all of the forces that animate nature and the mutual positions of the beings that compose it, if this intellect were vast enough to submit the data to analysis, could condense into a single formula the movement of the greatest bodies of the universe and that of the lightest atom; for such an intellect nothing could be uncertain and the future just like the past would be present before its eyes. (http://en. wikipedia. org/wiki/Mechanism_%28philosophy%29) Unfortunately for mechanism, the mind is impossible to define in mechanical terms, as it is not a corporeal substance that can be measured. Descartes responds to this problem with dualism, saying that the mind is a â€Å"thinking thing† which is the essence of himself. This â€Å"thing† doubts, believes, hopes and thinks, all the while existing only in a metaphysical sense as a non-extended, thinking thing; while the body is a non-thinking, extended thing. With this he had a clear and distinct idea of both mind and body, and whatever he could conceive, God could create. This led him to believe that the mind could be separate from the body, a substance whose essence was thought. Thus the idea of dualism was founded by the existence of God. As Descartes did not completely agree with mechanism or materialism, he had to essentially obliterate all his beliefs, wipe his proverbial slate clean, and start again. To reevaluate what was real and what was false, Descartes had to doubt everything, including the existence of God, and if he/she exists, whether or not God was a deceiver. Descartes put forward the question of whether or not there are any attributes to the idea of God which couldn’t have originated in himself, God being â€Å"infinite, eternal, unchangeable, independent, supremely intelligent, supremely powerful†¦Ã¢â‚¬ He came to the conclusion that none of these attributes could have come from him alone, as he possesses none of them. In this sense, God must exist. He then postulates the hierarchy argument, where the idea of God could not have been thought of by him, or man in general, as the attributes seen in God belong to some higher form. It does not matter that he cannot â€Å"grasp the infinite†, or touch the attributes of God as he himself is finite; the very nature of something being infinite is that it cannot be grasped by something finite. Thus, since the ideas of God are in some higher form, they must be the truest and most clear and distinct of all Descartes’ ideas. He then decided to ask how he could have received the idea of a perfect being from God, as he has never encountered such from the senses. He comes up with the idea of a craftsman, who, when he invents something, may fiddle and change parts of his creation as he chooses. The idea of God, in Descartes’ mind, could not be changed or interfered with; therefore he could not have created it himself. This leads to the belief in the idea of God being innate in him. He again uses the idea of a craftsman, with the idea of God as a â€Å"mark of the craftsman† stamped on his work, man. Descartes’ then postulated that he could not exist with the innate idea of God in his mind without God existing. This fostered his belief that God could not possibly be a deceiver, since for something to be fraudulent or deceitful it has to have some defect, which in God there is none. This began to form the foundation on which Descartes would continue to prove existence through methodical doubt. After he determined that yes, God exists, Descartes turned his attention to truth and falsity. He has determined that God would never deceive him, as wanting to deceive is a sign of malice or weakness, traits not pertaining to God. If God, then, does not deceive him, errors on his part must be of his own judgment. He uses God as a benchmark, saying he is somewhere between God and nothingness, between supreme being and non-being. In meditation number four, again he uses the craftsman analogy, that the more skilled the craftsman, the more perfect the creation. Since God created Descartes, he must be perfect, which leads him to believe that his making mistakes may be better than not doing so. Human free will is an issue that philosophers of every generation tackle in some form or another, and Descartes was no exception. When dealing with will, he believed that will is simply one’s ability to do or not do something, to accept or reject a proposition. This will is such that when a decision is presented to us, we have no sense that we are pushed one way or another by any external forces. He believed that freedom is strengthened by natural knowledge and divine grace, and that since God gave him the power of willing, it cannot be the cause of his mistakes. Simply, a mistake is made when one’s will extends beyond their intellect, when one applies will to matters they do not understand. This philosophy states that God has given him the freedom to choose his destiny in situations of which he does not have complete understanding, a view quite inconsistent with the beliefs of the time. Descartes could not have been an atheist and have come to the conclusions he did. The science of the time was a rigid belief that everything in the universe was bound by the laws of matter, and that it moved like a complex clock, everything pre-determined from the time it was created. A strong supporter of the idea of dualism, Descartes believed that the mind was not bound by the laws of matter and was intangible, a substance whose essence was thought. Since God created him, whatever he could conceive could also be created by God which is the founding principle of dualism. When he began to tear down his belief system, he needed a foundation on which to build his new knowledge. He proved the existence of God by using the hierarchy theory, that since none of the traits of God could be attributed to himself, they must have come from God. With this knowledge, Descartes tackled truth and falsity, the essence and existence of material things, and the real distinction between mind and body. All of which in some for or another were based on his foundation: that God exists and is not a deceiver. If he could prove the existence of God through methodical doubt, he could prove anything. He made this quite clear near the end of his fifth meditation; â€Å"I see plainly that the certainty and truth of all knowledge depends strictly on my awareness of the true God. So much that until I became aware of him I couldn’t perfectly know anything.

The journal shows the summary of all the transactions conducted by the business and shows the ending balances of all the accounts held by the business. The first transaction is the investment of capital by the owners on the first day, which increases owners’ equity by $50 and increases cash by the same margin. The purchase of equipment by on credit increases the accounts payable by 413.75, and increases inventory by the same amount. The other transaction that appears dominant in the journal is the sale of lemonade, which increases cash and reduces the inventory held. The reduction in inventory is transferred to an expense account by debiting the cost of goods sold account and crediting the inventories so that the inventories reduce and the relevant expenses are charged in the relevant accounting period. After all the transactions have been recorded in the journal, the transactions are transferred to a general ledger, T-accounts, which record the transactions in the independent records for each account. Balance sheet The balance sheet for the Lemonade stand business is got from the data in the journal and the general ledger; and is a summary of the final figures for the account held by the Lemonade stand business. The balance sheet data shows that the final cash account has a balance of $185.90, which is a figure got after adding all the revenues that come from the bus iness and subtracting the cash outflows; expenses and purchases. The other item in the balance sheet is the inventory, which shows a final figure of $10.05, which is the final figure after all sales, purchases and replacement of inventory has been done. After cash and inventory have been added up, the fixed assets are added to the balance sheet, which, in this case study, are the assets that the stand has. The equipment for the lemonade stand is valued at $9.00, a figure that is found after adding up all purchases of equipment that the stand possesses. Liabilities that the lemonade stand has are accounts payable, which are realized when the lemonade stand makes purchases on credit. The liabilities are than added to the owners’ equity, which is in itself a summation of the owner capital and retained earnings (Brownfield, 2007). The owners’ equity is a total of $165.95, which, when added to the liabilities worth $39.00, come up to a total of $204.95, which is equal to th e total assets held by the firm.Advertising Looking for essay on accounting? Compare and Contrast the Glorious Revolution and the America essays

Compare and Contrast the Glorious Revolution and the America essays What were the worldwide effects on the political expectations for self-government and individual liberty after the American Revolution and the Glorious Revolution? I believe that the American Revolution was not a fair war because the British had a huge advantage. The British had a bigger and better army, while the Americans had almost nothing. The Americans were inexperienced and were mainly comprised of farmers fighting for independence. Even though the Americans had some soldiers willing to fight, the Americans were unable to pay the soldiers enough money to fight a war and they did not have enough food, supplies, guns, ammunition, and war ships. I believe that the Glorious Revolution ended up the way that it did because the people did not like James II and did not agree with the things that he wanted to do while in power. The Glorious Revolution was fought while James II was king because he made some decisions that the people did not like. One reason why England did not like James II was because he wanted to convert the religious beliefs of the thoroughly Protestant England to a Catholic religion. The people did not agree to many of his ideas. Even though James was able to create a very strong army, he was not able to conquer other lands and gain the respect of his men. While they were at war his army abandoned James II to fight for other sides. After James was left by his men, Parliament claimed that he had abandoned his country and went into exile in France. On February 6, 1689, James II was succeeded by William of Orange as the new King and his wife, Mary, James IIs daughter, became Queen of England. A few months later, James II decided that he wanted to come back to England to try and regain the throne, but failed along with his son and grandson who also tried to assume their line for the throne. Now the American Revolution was a war whose main purpose was for the Americans to escape from England&ap...

EXAMINE THE DISTINCTIVE PROBLEMS THAT DEVELOPMENT NGOs ENCOUNTER Essay

EXAMINE THE DISTINCTIVE PROBLEMS THAT DEVELOPMENT NGOs ENCOUNTER - Essay Example The spheres of work of development NGOs are diverse, encompassing humanitarian relief, long-term development, policy formation and political advocacy (Atack 1999). The only common element among all NGOs is that they are not a part of the government (Tandon 2001). Development NGOs play an important part in determining the form taken by civil society. They also support advocacy NGOs, unions, social movements, interest groups and research institutions among others (Clark 2006). Nongovernmental organisations (NGOs) â€Å"have become increasingly important agents of the development process in the countries of the South† (Atack 1999, p.855). To meet the standards of legitimacy, development NGOs are required to meet four critieria: representativeness, distinctive values, effectiveness and empowerment. From the middle of the 1990s, with the recession hitting industrialised countries, less money was available for the funding of development NGOs. An example is the cutting off of funds to South African NGOs by international benefactors, who assumed that the new democratic government of the country would fund them. Due to lack of adequate finances, development NGOs may spread themselves too thinly with respect to sectors, objectives or geography. Also, mismanagement and seepage from programme funds occur frequently (Lynch and Modgil 1997), resulting in reduced financial strength. Edwards and Fowler (2002) support the view that development NGOs face complex challenges constantly, since funding is unpredictable, social change is complex, guidance availability is low, and there is no single measure for success. For effective functioning, NGOs should develop their management capabilities. In the case of NGOs involved in development education the main challenges include the need for renegotiation and accurate definition of development NGOs’ relationship with the state. This is because the independence of the developmental NGO may get

Summary hardware, software findings Research Paper

Summary hardware, software findings - Research Paper Example This is a special information system that is procured differently from the rest of the software. This information system, however, is not fully owned by the Intel Corp company. This is because it is hired from the cloud service provider (Blundell, 2008). Another important feature of the architecture of hardware and software of Intel Corp is that it has adopted the latest technologies in their system. There is the use of cloud computing in their network. This technology helps to overcome the challenges of having servers and whole applications on the local site. This system and arrangement are seen in the way the company operates the CRM software. The CRM software is accessed from the cloud service provider. This means that the company does not own the software system in full (Hamlet, 2010). Another important aspect that can be seen in the software is that of using one vendor to procure the software. Most computers are installed with Windows Operating systems and Windows based software applications, like office suites and utility programs. The hardware components that are found in the company are seen to adopt client-server architecture in most of the structures that have been analyzed and presented so far. Most of the computer hardware is structured in such a way that the machines depend on each other to access the important server parts of the hardware. One deficiency that I find with the software is that they are from one vendor. As stated earlier, most of the applications are for Windows. In case there will be a need to have an upgrade so that there other applications from the other vendors, this could be a tedious and difficult task. This is because there is no arrangement that has been done to ensure that the future installations of different applications are well taken care of. Another deficiency is that of efficient

Principles of logistics and supply chain management Assignment

Principles of logistics and supply chain management - Assignment Example Supply-chain management deals with regulating the relationships of the business with the stakeholders in order to enhance the quality of services at affordable prices throughout the supply chain. Effective logistics is the core requirement in the enhance customer satisfaction in the supply-chain process. The business should have a detailed coordination of complex operations that involve facilities, suppliers, and organizational publics. Understanding the background of the business environment is necessary as an initial process of principles of logistics and supply chain. The findings from the case study analysis help the concerned stakeholders to create proper recommendations and conclusions for future running of the business. This paper will focus on Kellogg’s, a national distribution center in the Pacific Asia region to analyze the business situation. Analysis of the business and key findings from the case study will help in answering the case study questions. Introduction A ccording to Murphy and Wood (2011, p.20), logistics is one of the primary requirements of a country’s economic growth. Logistics creates utility to goods and services, and in the process, it helps to satisfy human wants. Utility is the ability of a commodity to satisfy a given need or want. Murphy and Wood (2011) further identified four types of utility, which are possession utility, form utility, place utility, and time utility. These four types of utility must be organized to interact in the supply-chain process in order to create usefulness of commodities. Logistics activities add value goods and services, especially through time and place utilities. This makes warehousing an essential part of the logistics system, although warehousing is rapidly being replaced distribution centers. Supply chain comprises of people, resources, activities, and organizations involved in moving a product or service from the supplier to the customer. The management of a business strategically places the supply-chain elements in such a way that they can effectively transform raw materials, natural resources, and components into ready-to-consume products (Bowersox, Mentzer & Speh, 2008, p. 88). Supply-chain management is defined as the process of regulating, directing, and coordinating the stakeholders along the distribution channel to ensure effectiveness and efficiency in the transactions. Principles of supply-chain management include product differentiation, customization of logistics, proper market planning, product differentiation, strategic sourcing, adoption of a supply chain based on wide technology strategy and development of channel-spanning performance measures. The modern business arena is characterized by cutthroat competition where only organized and effective supply chain managers will survive. Proper management of supply chains requires businesses to adopt strategic processes such as agility, adaptability, and alignment in their distribution channels. Backg round and Business Environment The business environment has undergone massive transformations in the 21st century. The current market is not the same as the blacksmiths’ or artisans that thrived in the early 2oth century (Woolven, 2001, p.44). Barter trade existed during the commodity economy because there was any other way traders could have exchanged value for goods. There were not strict supply chains since traders knew where to meet and make transactions. The markets have grown and have become more diversified than

Report to the Board of Directors To, The Board of Directors, Tata consultancy services Ltd. Subject: Recommendations for the (TCS) business unit. Respected Board members, In the report which is attached along with a critical research and analysis has been done on the corporate strategy followed by your company. The research and analysis has been conducted by using various corporate strategy tools and methods and the companys past and current strategies have been highlighted. On the basis of the strengths and the weaknesses of these strategies we have stated so; following are the recommendations which I was able to generate after studying the strategies adopted by the TCS: TCS should create specific value propositions aimed directly at the relevant stakeholders which include business executives, IT personnel in order to improve your market positioning in domestic markets. The excess exposure on the financial service markets which usually need to be kept confidential is considered as the main weakness of TCS so they can should focus more on increasing their IP (Intellectual Property) assets in order to lower the momentous publicity to financial markets (Tata Consultancy Services Limited, 2010). TCS can also go for isolation strategies with premium services like IT solutions and focus on a niche market. In market Meltdowns (recession) marketing can work as a differentiator. TCS can alter its focus from Low cost advantage to high quality services considering quality being pioneer in the (IT) industry. TCS can offer diverse services to refrain from being over-dependent and increasing exposure to the vulnerabilities of few sectors like USA. TCS can adopt ADM (Application Development and maintenance) system to increase value added services, BPO to Consulting and Package Implementation (Tata Consultancy Services Limited, 2010). Consolidation and strategic acquisitions are essential for future growth of revenues. The HP-EDS merger (one of the biggest ever merger in this industry) is evidence to this. TCS should prepare for such opportunities which are strategic fit for the company. TCS has rightly placed SMB (Small and Medium Businesses) as a separate strategic unit, which should be focused aggressively. They should also focus consulting practice on the same business unit (Tata Consultancy Services Limited, 2010).

Affirmative Action Essay: Quotas for White Players in the NBA? :: Persuasive Essay, Argumentative

Is Affirmative Action Analogous to Setting Quotas for White Players in the NBA? The NBA analogy doesn't even apply because that is not how affirmative action even works. All affirmative action recipients must be qualified for their jobs. Besides, the fact that blacks overcome their social disadvantages to dominate in the NBA is no justification for keeping them disadvantaged. The argument that it's wrong to give whites an even greater advantage to make up for their lack of merit is irrelevant. If blacks got an equal start in life, they might even dominate the NBA more than they do now. The fact that they don't is a further injustice to their merit. This is a prize piece of rhetoric among anti-affirmative critics. Teams in the National Basketball Association select their players based on merit. For some reason, blacks have come to represent the vast majority of players in the NBA, even though they form only 12 percent of the U.S. population. If we were to impose racial quotas on the NBA to make the teams resemble a cross-section of society, we would be throwing more talented black players off the teams and replacing them with less talented white players. Obviously, that would be an injustice. However, this example is a parody of affirmative action, and is so wrong as to be irrelevant. If affirmative action were truly applied to the NBA, then a study would be done to determine the percentage of qualified players from each race. Although 75 percent of the male population is white, and 12 percent black, the study would probably find that 90 percent of the qualified players are black, and only 10 percent white. It would then set an affirmative action goal of 90 percent black and 10 percent white players, and ask the team-owners to conduct a good-faith effort to meet these goals. Penalties would be incurred only if a racist team insisted on 100 percent black players, and a blatant case of discrimination could be proven. We could quit here, but it is also worthwhile to address the point that critics of affirmative action thought they were making with this example. And that is that it's wrong to deny top jobs to the most qualified in the name of racial fairness. However, the NBA example fails to make even this point. To see why, imagine that you have been asked to preside as a judge at a track-and-field event.

Juvenile Delinquency essays

Juvenile Delinquency essays I felt this was a good place to start, considering I feel that most criminal activity starts at a young age. There are very few criminals who have picked up the trade in their adult life. Just as manners and norms are developed at an early age, delinquency and defiant behavior is also. There are certain factors that wage deviance that I think are important to explain. Heredity is an important factor, a lot of characteristics come from this. How one may react to certain situations is not genetic, but can be developed early in life by home situations. The way one is treated and disciplined as a young child directly affects how he or she will perceive and treat those around them in life. The environment a child grows up in plays a key role in determining the childs view on life, which may have a direct effect on his or her proneness to delinquency. There are certain characteristics that I feel we inherit and certain characteristics that we develop at a young age. Some genes may cause a child to have a short temper or a limited attention span. Other genes may make it difficult for the child to learn in school. He or she may turn to other means and other children to feel part of the group. Often these other children are more defiant. Without proper discipline a lot of these characteristics can become repeated and condoned behavior. By generalizing traits we can distinguish inherited traits from learned behavior. I believe that when children are young they learn the norms of society from their parents, but they learn social roles from their peers. They learn how to be accepted and what behavior will get them the appropriate response. First and foremost certain things need to be noted. A delinquent child is one that has little or no respect for authority. This causes them to act out against authority and any formal institution constraining him or her. A delinquent child is often characteri...

A Comparison of Limbo with Nothings Changed Essay Example

A Comparison of Limbo with Nothings Changed Essay Example A Comparison of Limbo with Nothings Changed Paper A Comparison of Limbo with Nothings Changed Paper Essay Topic: Poetry The poems Limbo and Nothings Changed have a lot in common if you look past the actual words into the meaning of the poems, you will see they both originate from the same theme; racism. Limbo tells the story of the Limbo dance and the joy of performing it. The poem is telling the story of a slave travelling from Africa to the West Indies in a slave ship. On the long journey, the slaves invented a dance called the Limbo dance which kept them fit and healthy so they could survive the journey. The dance involved walking underneath a stick only bending your knees; the stick started off low down then gradually went up every time you went underneath it without touching the stick. Nothings Changed is a poem based on the segregation of white people and black people in Cape Town, South Africa. In 1940, apartheid was gripping over South Africa, the rich white people earned 12 times as much as the black people. There was no actual law abut it but everybody knew it, the black people were forbidden to go where white people went. The poet is expressing his views about how bad the situation is and how much he hates it in this poem. In both poems, they involve white people taking advantage of black people and they both come from the view of black people and tell us how they are treated. However this is not so obvious in the poem Limbo, it can be spotted by the opinion the African Slave has of the White people in charge of the ship, the quote the dumb gods are raising me could mean the guards of the slaves picking him up to throw him off the ship. In Nothings Changed, this is more obvious because the poem tells the reader about District 6 where all the black people live, how they are not allowed in the posh restaurants with white linen table cloths and how they have their own scummy cafe with dirty floors and plastic tables. Another similarity of both poems is the way they both use sound words to portray the environment and setting. In Limbo, the sound words such as silence, knock and drum set the rhythm of the poem and give the impression of the actual Limbo dance. In Nothings Changed, sound words are used to give the impression of the places in which the African walks from and to; it also gives the reader a more visual image of the two restaurants. Examples of these words are click, crunch and crush which are hard sound words and grant the reader the impression of a hard life to live. In the same respect of using hard sound words, both poems portray a bleak picture of the locations where these two Africans spent their time. The setting of the ship in Limbo is a big dark boat in which resides evil, it does not portray a place where you would like to be. The setting in Nothings Changed is different from the ship because it does not sound all that bad; it sounds like a nice place however there is the underlying segregation that makes the reader feel hatred for the place. The poet shows us the area then he shows us the people that live in the area and that is what turns the reader around. Also, the way the scene is set in Nothings Changed does not motivate people to pack their stuff and hop on the next plane, the harsh words and attention to detail like amiable weeds, and it squats, in the grass and weeds do not exactly make it sound like a dream come true. Both poems involve one culture taking control and forcing the other to work for them, in Limbo, the Africans are taken from their homes and forced to work for the white people, while in Nothings Changed the white people own all the money and in doing so are lording over the natives. This theme for a poem suggests that the poets share the same opinion in that they do not like the English controlling the Africans and forcing them to live a life of poverty with little or no money. However the poets do differ on some occasions in their poems, Limbo and Nothings Changed have very different views on what should be done about their predicament. In Limbo, the message is one of acceptance and is telling the reader to accept the consequences and try and make the best of it. This is shown by the dance; it is depicted as being a joyous dance which is fun and exhilarating. Poems about slavery are not usually joyous and happy, but sad and full of hatred; this is because they are usually complaining about slavery. Nothings Changed does not encourage people to accept what is happening but to act upon it, it is a revolutionary poem full of hatred and it conveys that hatred to its audience to put an end to the maltreatment and poverty of black people. The last line in the poem: Nothings Changed brings about a dramatic end to the poem and the last stanza is one full of evil thoughts toward the white people. The layouts of the poems differ as well, Limbo has short stanzas and the layout indicates that of the movement of the dance, this helps the poem along with the beat. Meanwhile in Nothings Changed, the poet has made no obvious attempt to lay it out in a particular form other than stanzas arranged like paragraphs. I believe that the poet does not need to amplify his point with the layout but merely express himself with words. The major difference between the two poems though is the punctuation, in Limbo there is none but in Nothings Changed there is quite a lot. The abundance of punctuation in Nothings Changed shows that the poem was written for the fact of being read like a poem; unlike Limbo with no punctuation but a steady rhythm, it indicates it is like a song. The use of punctuation is clever because it forces the reader to read with a slower place and thus creating the effect of a hateful and despairing tone. The two poems are based on the same theme with some minor differences in the language and settings but both poets feel strongly on anti-racism but go their different ways about it. Limbo and Nothings Changed are the same in view but are completely opposite in the way they go about repairing it; one says acceptance while the other has a mind for war!

SELECTION FROM THE SUMMA THEOLOGIAE, ON CHARITY Essay

SELECTION FROM THE SUMMA THEOLOGIAE, ON CHARITY - Essay Example The first component of â€Å"charity itself† forms the centre of discussion in this essay. It consists of two perspectives, which include itself and charity considered as itself. This essay narrows this discussion to the aspects of† itself† which consists of eights points of inquiry. They include For the case of charity, being friendship is not true. Charity is not friendship because nothing is so convenient as to reside with one’s friend. This is objection is attributed to the philosophers2. In addition, charity is exercised by man to God but does not exist with men. This implies that charity is not friendship. According to the bible, Christ cements true friendship. This is where the fear of God and the learning of the divine scriptures bring men together. Contrary to this, Jo.xv.15 quotes â€Å"I will not now call you servants...but my friends† according to the philosophers’ argument, this statement was said by reason and not based on charity. This implies that charity is friendship. It is noticeable that not each aspects or character consists of friendship. For instance, the well wishing in itself does not suffice for friendship for certain common love. On the second article â€Å"whether charity is something created in the soul† the objection to this statement is attributed to the aspect of God is charity; God is a spirit (De Trin. Ix.17). This implies that charity is not something that can be created in the soul, but remains God Himself. A further objection is attributed to the fact that God is life of the soul spiritually just as the soul remains life of the body, according to Deut. Xxx.20. However, on the contrary, Augustine argues that, by charity the movement of the soul towards the enjoyment of God for His own sake. This implies that charity is created in the soul. On equal measure the argument goes further to define God’s acts as powerful and perfect. This follows that, charity is created in the soul, because it’s God’s act,

Homer argues thaat human victory over desire is possible because Essay

Homer argues thaat human victory over desire is possible because - Essay Example (Barnouw, 1) Unlike other Gods, Homer chooses to remain mortal and in such a life he has to face number of challenges and situations where he has to choose between his desire and his duty. His biggest challenge was the resistance of temptation. The first temptation he and his men had to face was while encountering sweet lotus plant. â€Å"They fell in, soon enough, with Lotos Eaters, who showed no will to do us harm, only offering the sweet Lotos to our friends...† (IX. 98-100) They thought if they ate the plant it was not a bad idea, but to resist the plant was a much wiser option. â€Å"†¦but those who ate this honeyed plant, the Lotos, never cared to report, nor return: they longed to stay forever, browsing on that native bloom, forgetful of their homeland† (IX. 101-104). Homer not only resisted this tempting plant but also forced his soldiers to get back into the ship, when he said, â€Å" I forced them, eyes full of tears, into our hollow ships, dragged them underneath the rowing benches, and tied them up†. (IX. 105-107) Yet another temptation they had to face was Seirenes. She would try to lure men with her beauty and music, â€Å"Square in your ship’s path are Seirenes, crying beauty to bewitch men coasting by...† (XII. 101-104) If men are not able to show their resistance towards Seirenes, they could fell into her clutches and no body could save them from death. â€Å"Woe to the innocent who hears that sound! He will not see his lady nor his children in joy, crowding about him, home from sea; the Seirenes will sing his mind away on their sweet meadow lolling†¦(XII. 50-54)† Sirens also tried to tempt Odysseus when she said that, â€Å"Come this way, honored Odysseus, great glory of the Achaeans, and stay your ship, so that you can listen here to our singing; for no one else has ever sailed past this place in his black ship until he has listened to the honey-sweet voice that issues from our lips; then goes on well pleased knowing more than ever he did; for we
